JOTS ON HIP-HOP FROM ON-THE-GROUND 2 03/03/2010
(Second Entry) So I have been thinking a bit about this Hip-Hop. I have also read a book or two. It was certainly enlightening to learn some of the history; or at least become somewhat aware of it, more than I ever was. Yet, it seems one can only go so far with books. While there should always be room for the rigors of academic research, the intuition in experience and observation is unique. I have heard people say that participation (in an event) yields a better perspective for reflection. The conclusion of such a reflection can then be bolstered by the libraries. Balance. Actively participating within some of the “so-called elements” of Hip-Hop, I hope to understand what Hip-Hop could/should mean to me, for my life. Rather than understand, construct would be the better word. This is fitting. Why? Because it is as though the pieces to the puzzle of what is termed Hip-Hop and/or Hip-Hop Culture need to be reshuffled and rearranged. Specifically for me though. For instance, why do I use the phrase “so-called elements”? Whatever the reason (which I will save for another entry), rethinking through much of what is known as Hip-Hop and/or Hip-Hop Culture is like a playful reconstruction for the mind – my mind. Something to do. Or ennui. I suppose the adjectival phrase suspicious riddle is not out of place here. Besides, what is a culture that does not allow its participants a chance at revising the scripts, respectfully of course, ever-so-often? Is Hip-Hop really a culture or just hyperactivity? Sound a bit redundant? Whatever it is, it surely has many participants. Sub-culture? I am not even sure what that means. I wonder what DJ is performing this weekend. Heard about some local break-dancers putting together a showcase. Oh yeah, and that one rapper (or Emcee?).
